About Barboursville, West Virginia

Nestled in Cabell County, Barboursville is a historic village with a population of approximately 4,299 as of 2025. Founded in 1813 and incorporated in 1867, the town was named after James Barbour, then Governor of Virginia. Barboursville served as the county seat until the late 19th century and played a significant role during the Civil War, including hosting one of the earliest land battles on July 14, 1861.

Today, Barboursville is known for its blend of historical charm and modern amenities. The Barboursville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, showcases the town's rich architectural heritage. The village also serves as a regional retail hub, offering residents and visitors a variety of shopping and dining options.

About the Barboursville Police Department
The Barboursville Police Department is comprised of 23 sworn officers, to include road unit officers, detectives, school resource officers, and administrative officers. Our officers are dedicated to serving and protecting the community with professionalism and integrity.
In 2016, the department moved into a new headquarters located in the renovated former Post Office on Main Street, enhancing its operational capabilities.

Barboursville maintains a relatively low crime rate compared to national averages. According to recent data, the village has a violent crime rate of 1.15 per 1,000 residents, which is below the national median. The Barboursville Police Department is committed to maintaining public safety through proactive community policing and engagement.
